There's no better way to enrich your family heritage than with a gathering of all the branches of the family tree and there's no better location for your family (or class) reunion than Colbert County, Alabama. We have a host of "family-friendly" gathering spots, from the rustic to the formal They are perfect for family gatherings. HELPFUL TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE FAMILY REUNION Keep It Simple, Keep It Fun! This should be the overall goal as you move through each step of hosting a Family Reunion. For many, this will be their official vacation time off from work, so be sure to allow free time for them to relax or do something special on their own. Who You Gonna Call? Designate a contact person (probably yourself) for the Reunion. Prepare a simple piece of paper that you can copy that contains the name of the event; dates of the event; location and main telephone number for the location; and the family reunion contact persons name, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address. Include this paper in each of your mailings so family members will have a quick and easy way to follow up. (This contact sheet will usually end up on the front of someones refrigerator to help them remember the event!) Use a Lifeline! Find one other family member who will help organize the Reunion as an assistant. This is extremely useful if there are a number of extended family members living some distance away. Let the assistant be in charge of contacting everyone in their immediate area and this will save on long distance calls and postage. Be sure to outline clearly what the assistant is resonsible for to insure everyone is receiving the same information! Lets All Gather at the River! Contact the Colbert County Tourism & Convention Bureau for free brochures to distribute to each family unit. This will let our new visitors know all the amenities available to them here, provide simple maps on traveling, and give them our contact information. Brochures in quantity are available once reservations are made. The End is Near! Set a deadline for making reservations and rsvp for attending the Reunion. Include this in all correspondences as soon as possible. It is difficult to plan on-site activities when you are unsure how many will be attending. Book Em, Dano! Keep your records organized. A good idea is to get one address book seperate from all your others. Keep just family reunion contacts listed in it. This is convenient for making copies of the listing and including in each family members Welcoming Package when they arrive at the Reunion. (It also makes its easier to name the next Reunions coordinator at the current gathering since they will already have all the information!) Decade Detectives. Part of the enjoyment of a family reunion is exploring the past. Ask everyone to bring some sort of family history but try to assign one person to compile it once everyone arrives. A paper chart of the family roots is a fun activity for everyone to fill in and makes a great keepsake of the reunion. No Leisure Suites, Please! Be sure to let reunion attendees know what type of clothing to bring. Give them a general idea of the type weather to expect and the type activities planned such as swimming, hiking, fishing, volleyball or even a resort casual-type evening dinner. And You Are . . .? Bring adhesive name badges that can be filled out on site with a bold ink marker. This makes it easier for everyone to converse with other family members if they can easily see their names. Bridge the Generation Gap! Plan activities that can involve family members of all ages. Checkers tournaments, friendly softball games, horseshoe pitching, fishing, bingo and charades are some good ideas. You can also let all the younger family members have a pajama party in one cottage while the older members enjoy snacks and conversation in another. Be creative and keep it fun. |
